my backwards walk

i’m working on my backwards walk
walking with no shoes or socks
and the time rewinds to the end of may
i wish we’d never met then met today

i’m working on my faults and cracks
filling in the blanks and gaps
and when i write them out the don’t make sense
i need you to pencil in the rest

i’m working on drawing a straight line
and i’ll draw until i get one right
it’s bold and dark, girl, can’t you see?
i done drawn a line between you and me

I woke up to “Blue Collar Man” by Styx this morning. Literally, the first words I heard today were:

“Give me a job, give me security.”

Give me a break, Austin radio.

“bicycle” by memory tapes (seek magic)

i’m in love with you, little sister
we ride home in the night
while under our feet, the rain paints the street with the stars
passing cars with light trails behind them
we could follow them on
giving this town is wearing me down
lets take off
no one would know that we’ve gone

falling feels like flying

Crazy Heart, right?

How about we take the song back to its roots, right here in Austin, with Stephen Bruton and The Resentments. Bruton takes the lead on his song, with Scrappy Jud Newcomb right next to him on guitar, and Bruce Hughes pickin’ up the vocal harmony (you know, the part sung by Colin Farrell in the movie…)

Austin music sure does miss Stephen Bruton. Here’s a video of “Falling Feels Like Flying” by Stephen Bruton and The Resentments circa 2008:

For the sake of cultural context, and the fact that Crazy Heart is a phenomenal film, here are Jeff Bridges and Colin Farrell filming the song:

(thank you sneaky movie extra for the video!)
